Proposed resolution condemns Confederate flags

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — A local man is asking the Charlottesville City Council and the Albemarle Board of Supervisors to publicly condemn displays of the Confederate flag.
The proposed resolution, written by University of Virginia professor Frank Dukes, has support from social justice groups and comes after a group called The Virginia Flaggers raised a 30-by-50-foot Confederate battle flag near Interstate 64 in Louisa County on March 31.
A social justice activist links the installation of that flag to the lawsuit to preserve the Confederate monuments in downtown Charlottesville.
“They’re connected by ideology, and they’re connected by people,” said Ben Doherty, an organizer with the group Showing Up for Racial Justice. “The Confederate flag that Virginia Flaggers raised represents the same hateful ideology and racial terrorism that the Confederate monuments here in our parks do.”
In an emailed statement, the Virginia Flaggers denied the flag represents hate, and had harsh words for the resolution, calling it “ludicrous, a waste of time and community resources, and another attempt by Charlottesville extremists to further divide the community and incite violence.”
Charlottesville City Council Clerk Paige Rice says the city council may take up the resolution at the April 16 meeting under “other matters” or place it on the agenda at the first meeting in May.
