Turner Ashby Camp Visit

Tuesday, September 13th, I had the privilege of traveling to Winchester, Virginia to present a program to the men of the Turner Ashby SCV Camp #1567. For some time I had been eager to make the trip to Stonewall Confederate Cemetery there to the grave of Gen. Turner Ashby, who is buried there with his brother, Captain Richard Ashby. What an honor to be able to pay my respects. One bucket list item scratched off! :)

With a little time before the meeting I was able to take a long walk through the cemetery. It is an absolutely beautiful setting and the early fall breeze and quiet of being completely alone gave me the perfect opportunity to pause, reflect, and remember.

As I stood at the base of the monument to the unknown 829 Confederate dead buried beneath a mound, I was literally moved to tears at the thought of the sacrifice of these men…and the mothers, wives, and children who waited for their loved ones to return, some until they took their last breath, never knowing what happened to them…and the thought of those who wish to erase their memory 150 years later.

What they were, all know.”

Supper and meeting with the camp were a real pleasure. I was pleased to get a chance to see the camp’s silk reproduction of Ashby’s Mountain Rangers’ flag. What a beauty!

I am truly grateful for the warm welcome and generous support of the members of the Turner Ashby SCV Camp #1567. It was a terrific night…and as an added bonus, I left with a lead for a possible flag site in the area. Thank you, Commander Kern for the invitation!
