Subject: Va Flaggers: Charlottesville RE LEE Monument Update/Rally, Monday 4-18-2016

SAVE LEE PARK RALLY/PRESS CONFERENCE Monday, April 18, 4:00 p.m. LEE Park, Charlottesville, VA

This Monday, April 18th, Charlottesville City Council will hold its first public hearing on the “Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Monuments, and Public Spaces”, during its regularly scheduled Council Meeting. As we shared in previous e-mails, this commission was created after Vice-Mayor Bellamy and councilman Szacos made public their desires to remove the RE Lee statue and rename LEE Park in Charlottesville. The Mayor’s comments show him to be in support of these efforts, as well…

The Va Flaggers will hold a press conference/rally in Lee Park prior to the meeting. We are asking all concerned citizens to join us at LEE Park from 4:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m. We will have speakers on a variety of topics relating to the LEE Monument, Confederate History in Charlottesville, and the legal issues that prevent the removal or alteration of the magnificent Robert E. Lee Memorial in Lee Park. We hope to have a good presence and send a strong message to Charlottesville City Council and the rest of the Commonwealth.

Immediately following the rally, we will encourage all to head over to the City Council meeting and make a showing there. Those who wish to speak in the meeting, should be aware of the following opportunities to do so:

First, there is the “Matters By the Public” section at the beginning of the meeting. 12 speakers will have three minutes each to address council on any subject, but only if there is NOT a public hearing scheduled on that subject. In this case, there IS a public hearing scheduled on the monuments for the April 18 meeting. See Council Meeting agenda here: http://www.charlottesville.org/home/showdocument?id=40309 so there should be no monument discussion during this time.

Secondly, there will be a public hearing on the matter during the meeting. There will be a sign up sheet to speak during this time at the front of the room. There is a three minute time limit. Additional rules may be found here. http://www.charlottesville.org/departments-and-services/departments-a-g/city-council/council-meeting-procedures

There has been much work taking place behind the scenes over the past several weeks. As most of you know, the removal of war monuments and memorials STILL violates Virginia law, even with the Governor’s veto of a bill that would have provided clarification. There is little doubt that the Va Supreme Court will affirm this in a pending lawsuit. We will be prepared to take legal action if the Charlottesville City Council votes to move forward with removal or alteration of any Confederate monuments or memorials. There is also the push for a veto override next Wednesday, about which you should have received information earlier this week. Further, our title search has shown that there are additional legal options pertaining to the deed of the property. Finally, there is the swift and strong pushback that has occurred from citizens in response to this call to tear down the statue. We are confident that we will be able to Save the Robert E. Lee statue, but we need YOUR HELP!

The petition to keep the LEE Park and the RE Lee Statue now has almost 7,000 signatures. If you have not done so, please sign and share… https://www.change.org/p/mike-signer-keep-the-robert-e-lee-statue-in-lee-park

Also, if you have not done so, please take a moment BEFORE APRIL 18 to contact City Council members and let them know that you do not want to see any monuments removed or altered. Email addresses, phone numbers, and mailing addresses for each councilman are all available here: http://www.charlottesville.org/departments-and-services/departments-a-g/city-council/council-members

Please share this email and help spread the word.

Make your way to Charlottesville next Monday, April 18th, and make your stand for Gen. Robert E. Lee, and all of the men who wore the grey.
