Va Flaggers Update 4-10-12

VMFA:  Heading into our 28th week of Flagging, and our resolve is unchanged.  Each week, we are talking to more and more people who agree that the flags should go back up.

Thursday, April 5th – 15 Flaggers headed out to the Boulevard to forward the colors and protest the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ removal of Confederate Battle Flags from the portico of the Confederate Memorial Chapel, including a special visit from the Ga Flagger!   It was a chilly afternoon and traffic was light, but the last hour was very interesting, with a young man who was very agitated and very vocal and tested our discussion/debating skills and patience!

Saturday, April 7th. A beautiful day on the Boulevard! Jimmy Creech brought the Flagging Chuckwagon, stocked with fried chicken and all the fixins! He says he wants the folks at the museum to know we are in this fight for the LONG HAUL!  We had some great conversations today, but the highlight of the day was when Jimmie Yarris, a local artist stopped by. He had done a sketch of the Confederate Chapel a few years ago. When he heard about what we were doing, he wanted to do something to show his support. He went back and painted in two battle flags on the portico of the print, and hand delivered an 11 x 17 print to each one of us! It is absolutely gorgeous, and really made our day!

Meanwhile, across the river…the Virginia Flaggers turned out Saturday also at the Chesterfield Courthouse for the annual Chesterfield County Confederate History & Heritage day. We were well represented by Tripp Lewis and his family, Darlene and John Henry Taylor, and Matthew Barrett, who forwarded the colors, did some recruiting,  and helped educate those in attendance

THIS Saturday, April 14th, is Civil War and Emancipation Day in Richmond.  Shuttle buses will carry visitors across the city to see historical sites.  We want to  have folks at Tredegar (9-4) and the Boulevard campus (10-5), which includes the Confederate Chapel, the VMFA, the UDC Headquarters, and the Virginia Historical Society, which is promoting the fact that they will have the Emancipation Proclamation on display.  There is much educating to be done!  We need ALL Flaggers on deck for this event!  We will greet visitors as they arrive, share our information and have a Confederate presence at all of these locations.  Please let me know ASAP if you can attend so that we can make sure all locations are covered.

Our weekday flagging at the VMFA will be WEDNESDAY this week, April 11th, 4-Dusk.

Our efforts at the Museum of the Confederacy did not end at Appomattox on March 31st.  Stay tuned for updates and information on our continuing efforts there and at the VMFA.
