RICHMOND, Va. — The Sons of Confederate Veterans, a Civil War history group, continues to criticize Governor Bob McDonnell, saying under the Governor, Virginia’s history has "become political football."
“Both Governor McDonnell and former Senator and Governor Allen both had stars in their eyes nationally, and I think that they probably felt that it would be easier to dump on our organization and what we wanted, even though they were long longtime supporters of us,” Brag Bowling, spokesman for the organization told 630 WMAL.
Group leaders say their complaints extend beyond the governor’s apology for declaring last April "Confederate History Month."
“We’re not asking [McDonnell] to support slavery, we’re asking him to commemorate Confederate soldiers,” Bowling says.
The Sons requested the declaration, but McDonnell faced fire from civil rights group for failing to mention the role of slavery in the war.
