Repair of Confederate statue in Reidsville could cost $28K

REIDSVILLE — The controversial statue of a Confederate soldier that has stood over Reidsville’s downtown for more than 100 years could cost at least $28,000 to repair and remount.

Mayor James Festerman said Tuesday that the city received the estimate from a statue restoration professional in Salisbury.

The statue, which was at the center of a traffic circle, was broken into several pieces in May after being hit by a van.

The City Council has not decided whether it will repair the statue. It is unclear if the statue even belongs to the city or whether it belongs to the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which originally commissioned the statue.
