You mention using armed confrontation rather than a vote, and terrorism.
The seceded States voted to leave the Union, and wanted only to be left alone to work out their own destiny. The armed conflict occurred when the North invaded the South.
The North were the terrorists. They committed atrocities against both Southern soldiers and civilians. German and Japanese war criminals in World War II did far less, and they were punished. No Northern war criminal was ever punished.
