From May 1861 until March 1862, Northern Virginia was the front line of this most contentious War in our History. Many First and Important Events happened in the area. This includes the only City occupied throughout the War; the First Union and Confederate Officers killed; the First Aerial Recon; the Birth of the Confederate Battle Flag; and Jefferson Davis visit to discuss military objectives. I was awarded the prestigious Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal for my 1861 book. Col. John Mosby patrolled this area on behalf of the local citizens. He lived another 50 years after the War, becoming a friend of General Grant and mentor to a young George S. Patton.
