Most of us don’t equate Confederacy, racism

Ali Basty’s letter

["Confederate History Month: Pure racism," April 28] demonstrated a lack of awareness of history and an unnatural viewpoint on the topic.

The statement that "The celebration of Confederate History Month: Pure racism is a horrid endorsement of racism" would indicate that the writer believes that slavery and racism did not exist prior to establishment of the Confederacy, a significant omission of centuries of history.

The writer champions "gubernatorial proclamations that appropriately reflect equality and views of constituents."

I would opine that Gov. McDonnell’s proclamations are much closer to the views of Virginians than the thoughts expressed by Ali Basty.
