Civil War authors misfired on war’s cause

7/2/2010

Op-eds in the June 27 Viewpoints section ("One Rebel state ") discussed the cause of the War Against Southern Independence. The answer is very simple. The war was caused by Abraham Lincoln ordering the Union Army to invade Virginia and the Confederate states. The Confederate states did not want war.

Abraham Lincoln would have invaded the South even if there had been not one person enslaved.

Lincoln was concerned with the taxes he would lose from the seceding states and intended to set up revenue ships off the Confederate ports to collect same. Taxes from the South funded the federal government.

I cannot understand what people don’t understand about the meaning of sovereign states.
