Marker belongs in Forrest Park
January 11, 2013
As a taxpayer, I find the removal of the 1,000-pound Forrest Park marker a foolish waste of time and money (Jan. 9 article, "City, Civil War group skirmish"). The member of the Shelby County Historical Commission and the many members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans should be commended for raising funds from private sources to benefit the park and the city as a whole.
Does this mean that as a taxpayer I can complain and markers will be removed? Why wouldn’t our city leaders invest their time in raising similar funds to make improvements rather than complaining about gifts from caring and interested individuals?
Nothing about this unannounced removal appears to have been either fair or consistent. I would like to see the park marker returned to its location where it belongs.
