I read you note in SHNV and wish to gently suggest the reason for your confusion. I feel sure you will hear from others on this subject.
 
It is very simple….You have not read enough true history.
 
Like many of us, children of the South, you were educated out of northern books!  All of us were.  You were not aware you were being taught lies on top of lies.
 
You can fix your problem by broadening your reading material  to that of Southern authors. If you need names, let me know and I will be happy to profide.
