"… and Lee remained a loyal "American" to his death, schooling young folks in how to take up arms for said entity."
One small point:  Robert Edward Lee did not take a position at Virginia Military Institute.  He became President of Washington College, which was the Augusta Academy until it received a large endowment from George Washington, and is now Washington and Lee University.
Both colleges are in Lexington, Virginia, near the top of the Shenandoah Valley, and the campuses are very near each other.  The colleges would hold joint events, and it was remarked that Robert E Lee always refused to fall into step with the cadets, but would pointedly walk at his own pace.
