JEFFERSON, Ga. — A life-size bronze statue of a Confederate soldier will be dedicated in downtown Jefferson on Oct. 1.
The statue, to be dedicated by the Jackson County Volunteers, a local camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, replaces a marble sculpture erected in 1911. It was accidentally toppled and broken in 1940 while Jefferson residents were trying to decorate it.
Funds for the new monument came from the Georgia SCV Tag Fund, which derives its income from auto tags sold in Georgia with the SCV logo.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports the Jackson County Volunteers began working in 2006 to gain permission to put up the statue.
