Jeff Davis birthday

Published: May 30. 2008

Confederate President Jefferson Davis was born June 3, 200 years ago. Indeed, this year should be recognized as the "Year of Davis" in honor of this historic figure.

Alabama honors Davis with a state holiday the first Monday in June — June 2 this year. Numerous events are scheduled to mark Davis’ 200th birthday.

Beauvoir, the last Davis home in Biloxi, Miss., will be rededicated on June 3, after its restoration from Hurricane Katrina damage.

On Saturday, June 7, there will be events all day at Fairview, Ky., the birthplace of Davis. These events will be in the state park at the magnificent monument to President Davis.

In Montgomery on Saturday, June 14, there will be a parade and other events honoring Davis.

We in the Alabama Division, SCV, will mark the official state holiday on Monday, June 2, at noon on the Capitol grounds at the Davis statue. The public is invited to join with us in this tribute.
