Southern Heritage Month

From: redneckkitty32090@hotmail.com

Hi,

My name is Katelynn and I got the SHNV letter that you wrote regarding the young man and yourself about the month of April being Southern heritage month. I agree with you that its pathetic that people call themselves "country" or a "redneck", but yet they won’t stand up for what they believe in. I live in Florida and where I live if I even tried to send in a letter to be posted in a newspaper then I would be considered a racist and they would not put it. I am 17 years old and I wrote a 5 page report about the topic of the Confederate Battle Flag. The title is called "The Truth about the Confederate Battle Flag" It was a project that I had to do for one of my classes to get a grade. Ironically the teacher thought that she was black and she assumed that I was racist because of the essay. I turned it in for a grade and she read it and gave everyone their grades for their essays but left me out. When I asked her about this she simply said "Your essay was inappropriate" I was confused about this because she was the one who told me to write it since I was the only "redneck" in my class and the rest of the kids were black. They were always trying to intimidate me. (but it didn’t work) I stood up for what I believed in and because of that I was in the wrong. I took this matter to the dean. There I told him what happened and he asked for a copy of my report. After he read it he seen that there was nothing inappropriate about it and he made the teacher give me my grade. The reason why I’m writing you is because I’m giving you and the young man all the support that I can give you from Florida and to let you know that there are people out there that want the Southerners to be recognized for the good things that have been done and to get the image that all Southerners are racist. Granted there are Southerners that are racist but that’s how they chose their life to be. I do have a whole group of teens from my school that are ready to fight the system with me. They believe in the same things that I do. We are just tired of being hated at our school because of what we wear or what flag we fly. At my school we are not allowed to wear Dixie Outfitter shirts, or anything to do with the Confederate flag. But at the same token we have very racist black kids at my school that go around wearing Black Panther shirts and the administrators say nothing to them. They say since we are the home of the Panthers they are just showing school spirit. I think it is completely wrong and I think that they are just playing favoritism so they don’t get a hate crime pinned on them. Lake County is where I live and we have a weak school system. They do not want to fight for what is right. They only do what is easy. This week when I get back to school I’m going to put together a meeting at my house for everyone that believes that we should put an end to this and I’m going to the local news about this. If I can help you in any way let me know and I’d be more than happy to lend a helping hand. I can also send you a copy of my report too if you would like it. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

Katelynn

Thanks

Thank you for putting my email in the newsletter today. I got a lot of people that wrote me that wanted a copy of my essay. They all wrote me and told me how proud they are to see a young person get involved. They all also told me that if I needed a helping hand to write them and let them all know and they would be more than happy to help. I hope that you and everyone else know just how much I appreciate all of yours and their support. I am glad to see that people actually care what a teenager thinks. It truly means the world to me that total and complete strangers want to help when the school system don’t wanna stand up for their "kids". Again I thank you guys.
