The son of U.S. Grant, Frederick Dent Grant (1850-1912), was opposed to black men being graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point and used racial slurs in his comments. The father was no friend of the black man either and had admitted that he was “no abolitionist.”  This was the commanding general of Lincoln’s army of emancipation.
