Group Bringing Confederate Flags to Lexington for Lee-Jackson Day

Lexington, VA – On this Lee-Jackson holiday weekend, the group Virginia Flaggers took to the streets of Lexington Friday to make their voices heard.
Close to 50 people from across the South carried flags because they believe the city should allow the Confederate flag to be put in light pole stands for the holiday. That is the way it used to be in Lexington, before a city ordinance stopped it.
"During the next 2-days we will be on the street, carrying the flags, and telling people what is going on, and telling them about Lee and Jackson, and that we believe that the town of Lexington should honor their memory and not hide from it," said Susan Hathaway, Virginia Flaggers.
"A couple of years ago we did adopt an ordinance that indicated the only flags that could be flown in those light poles was the American flag, and the state flag, and the city flag, if one was ever designed," said Lexington City Manager Jon Ellestad.
Ellestad says the Confederate flag can be carried. The Virginia Flaggers have a permit for Saturday’s events, which start at 10:30 a.m.
