Dear Washington and Lee University,

Robert E. Lee DID NOT support slavery, as the brain dead "committee", apparently, contends. Someone should point out the main reason for the secession of the South wasn’t slavery, but was the iron handedness of the north whom weren’t willing for the South to capitalize on their vast income from cotton, of which some plantations were run by blacks. As a result of that iron handedness, things went north from there and have been going north ever since (being born in Chicago, I speak from experience).

From further below is this enlightened 5 line excerpt, of which 3 lines are Lees’ own:

Actually Lee was opposed to slavery but favored gradual emancipation. "There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil. It is idle to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it is a greater evil to the white than to the colored race."  The cause he fought for was independence, not slavery. [end excerpt]

Folks out here see your dilemma and are responding. Look for suggestions in all news columns that have comments to peruse, as in the below. pjr
