In David White`s article of Sunday 1 – 2 – 2011 " Next Week Marks 159th Anniversary of Alabama Leaving Union," Mr. White states that 35% of Alabamians owned at least one slave.

It would have been nice if Mr. White would have given his source of documentation for this or the mathematical equation he used to derive the number of 35% in this state owned at least one slave. In my 46 years of research on this subject most of the documentation I have found gives around 5% slave ownership in Alabama with the majority owning large numbers of slaves.

The facts are that the average Alabamian of the 1950 – 60 time period made 25 dollars a year & the minimum cost of a slave was 2 – 3 thousand dollars which, does not make it economically feasible that there was 35% of Alabamians who could even afford one slave.

Without the proper documentation to back his claim Mr. White might as well say that 35% of Alabamians today drive Rolls Royce’s as this too is far, far out of their price range.
