Mr. Harrup,

You made a good call on the Merrimac/ CSS Virginia.  The Merrimac was a Union sloop (sailing vessel) that the Yankees burned and sank to prevent capture by the Confederacy.  The only thing left was the hull which was used to build the CSS Virginia.  It was the CSS Virginia that battled the USS Monitor.  Period.  The ship’s name doesn’t change just to placate the Yankees.
