The Sons of Confederate Veterans Longstreet-Zollicoffer Camp No. 87 will hold their annual Confederate Decoration Day Commemoration Service at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, June 6, 2009,
at the Confederate Cemetery on Bethel Ave in East Knoxville. The cemetery is the resting place of over 1600 southern soldiers who died in the service of their country from disease and in the battles surrounding Knoxville during November and December of 1863.
The public is cordially invited to attend the commemoration to honor the service of these men of the South who stood against an armed invasion of Southern soil.
Re-enactors, both ladies and men will be present and a color guard will offer a 21 gun salute to the fallen heroes.
Our Speaker will be the Honorable H. K Edgerton. Mr. Edgerton, known as a tireless worker for Southern heritage and the memory of the Confederate soldier, is a past President of he NAACP in his hometown of Asheville and now President of Southern Heritage 411.
It is very important that attendees arrive no later than 10:30AM and park at the parking lot at the Mabry-Hazen House on Dandridge Ave. The parking lot is accessible from Rosedale Ave which is the first left on Dandridge Ave after crossing thru the intersection of E. Summit Hill, E. Hill, Martin Luther King and Dandridge Ave.
Shuttle service will be available from the Mabry Hazen Parking lot to the Cemetery from 10AM until 1PM.
For those interested in touring the historic Mabry-Hazen House, it will be open for tours after the Decoration Day Service beginning at about 12:30.
