Lynchburg Cemetery Holds Memorial Day Service for Confederate Soldiers

Lynchburg, VA – A group of people gathered Sunday in Lynchburg to honor confederate soldiers.

The Memorial Day service was held at the confederate section of the Old City Cemetery.

The memorial is sponsored by the Southern Memorial Association and the by Kirkwood Otey Chapter 10 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Organizers say they have held the ceremony for confederate soldiers in Lynchburg since 1866. They say want to continue the tradition and remind people of the meaning behind Memorial Day.

"We must not forget those people who have died in war for us," said Joan Brooks, a member of the local chapter of the Daughters of Confederacy .

There will be a Memorial Day service Monday at 11 a.m.  for all soldiers at Monument Terrace in Lynchburg.
