A Brave Young Lady
From: Shirley Gross

I’m just goin to get to the point. Our school has been trying to ban the confederate flag for years but it don’t work because the students fight back. They tell us not to wear the confederate flag we do anyway. Most of clothes are jeans and dixie outfitters shirts. They tell us that if you have a confederate flag in the back of your vehicle they can suspend ya or expell ya. In one case this year, a student was suspended for like half a year for refusing to remove his flags. Personally I think it is a crock. Another thing is the fact that the teachers don’t even know the real reason for the fight between the north and the south they think that it was fought over slavery when i know that it was fought over taxation without representation. When I told one of my teachers that, they told me that I was carzy and didn’t; know what i was talking about. Well I think i have made my point and thanks for all your effort.

Dear Shirley,
You are a brave young lady and I am proud of you for standing up for what you believe. There is a lot of ignorance about the War for Southern Independence and its causes but you seem to have found the truth.

If the teachers and adults in your school administration had half the courage and knowledge that you posses then your school would be an example of true history, diversity and tolerance.
