Boycott of Jonesborough, TN
As many of you know, we have been a Southern heritage battle in Jonesborough, TN regarding the exclusion of Confederate soldiers from the town’s Veterans Memorial Park.
In June, we went before the Jonesborough Board of Mayor and Aldermen and the board agreed, in front of us and the press, to amend the town’s policy and would allow the inclusion of Confederate soldiers on the memorial, and sent it back to their Veterans Affairs Committee to amend the policy.
However, when the board met in July to approve the amended policy, the amendment stated that all Civil War soldiers would only be designated as "Civil War" without showing which side the soldier fought for even though there are already bricks on the memorial that state, "US Army, Civil War".
In response to this action, the Southern Legal Resource Center, a non-proft legal service for heritage defense, drafted a resolution calling for an economic boycott on the town. The Sons of Confederate Veterans are holding their annual convention this weekend in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The resolution was introduced during Saturday’s meeting of the General Executive Council and passed, as written, by unanimous vote of the GEC.
The boycott is now in effect.
Copies of the resolution will be distributed to the press today and the news is expected to appear in the press on Monday.
