There was no comment area on the site, but to me Barbour’s response is insufficient. “I don’t go around denouncing people” is hardly a courageous stand against lies and hate. Some people – like those in the NAACP and the SPLC – should be denounced. Barbour should have done his homework and denounced the liars and their inaccurate contentions about Forrest and the Klan. He should have attacked their mendacity rather than simply avoiding the matter and giving credence to their accusations.
 
Politicians have got to stop doing everything in their power to walk a fine line between openly knuckling under to these groups and actually fighting back. Reactions like Barbour’s are just as cowardly and useless as a means of defending our First Amendment rights against political correctness and liberal hate groups as no response at all. Frankly, this is just one more nail in the coffin of Southern heritage – and Barbour’s political career.
