All about heritage
I commend Patterson for his essay on the request by the Sons of Confederate Veterans to honor their ancestors with a special Texas license plate.
I am not a member of the SCV, but I did have four great-grandfathers who were Confederate soldiers. I have no idea what motivated them to serve; nearly every able-bodied male of military age in the South joined the Confederate Army during the war.
Although I am not a member of the SCV, I believe it exists because folks are interested in their heritage and find the study of the Civil War very interesting. I see nothing racist about it, and I don’t believe anyone should be offended by an SCV license plate.
I had Cherokee ancestors, too, but I don’t find anything offensive about the Washington Redskins name.
