CONFEDERATE FLAG
‘A flag of history’
I would like to commend City Council member Glorious Johnson for her courage and her understanding of history.
Her courage is obvious because she will, undoubtedly, receive a lot of negative attention regarding her attendance at the Confederate Memorial Day event, her participation in leading the singing of I Wish I Was in Dixie and her comments.
Johnson’s recognition of the Confederate flag as a flag of heritage and history, not hate, and her comment that her mission is to be a "representative of all the people" show that she has an understanding of our history and a desire to unite rather than divide.
She appears to follow up with actually trying to represent all of the people, not just a segment of the population.
My hat is off to her. If she does, indeed, aspire to be Jacksonville’s first woman mayor, I think she has started down the right road.
